Provisional Entitlement Question
Hello, just posting to see if anyone can help. My Father is looking to complete the CBT (and possibly full bike test in future) so he can ride a 125cc motorcycle.
He passed his car driving test in the 1970s, and has recently got a photocard license to replace his old paper license at a cost of £20. Does he still have to apply for provisional motorcycle entitlement at a further cost of £34?, or is this something you automatically have if you pass the car test before 2001? I assume you still have to apply for it, but just wondered if anyone could confirm this, thanks. |
Re: Provisional Entitlement Question
I think (I might be wrong) But anyone with a licence pre 96 is already able to ride a 125cc - nothing higher though.
Meaning no CBT needed, as I say it may have changed... |
Re: Provisional Entitlement Question
Or im wrong, aparrently its only uptp 50cc if you got a driving licence before 2001... Link

Re: Provisional Entitlement Question

Re: Provisional Entitlement Question
Thanks for the replies. I called a training centre today, and was told that as he has a full driving license he does not need to apply for a provisional motorcycle license.
It is quite confusing as on his new photocard license, the space next to the A1 category (up to 125cc) is blank, but it appears the license does show a code P at the bottom which is entitlement for a moped. Just to confuse things there is also an AM category on the photocard which is also a moped code. Anyway, I think I have the answer now, thanks. |
Re: Provisional Entitlement Question
It has been made a minefield by fiu-dvla.
First Q/ Has everything been copied over from his original entitlements to his new licence? (They used to love dropping stuff off). Second Q/ check-up the website for the new codes used - beware, the web site is not always 100% correct. He may have be entitled to ride/drive something - but even if the dvla have c***ed it up it doesn't count when it comes to it (sort it first). |
Re: Provisional Entitlement Question
i think everyone needs to sit a CBT even with the old licence

Provisional Entitlement Question
A1 would only be filled in after he's passed a test.

Re: Provisional Entitlement Question
I passed my driving test in 89, I didn't have to get a motorcycle provisional when I took my cbt in 2008.
Even though I could ride a 50cc without L plates and a 125 with L plates, I was told by the insurance companies I wouldn't get insurance without CBT. |
Provisional Entitlement Question
On a 125 you wouldn't have been legal without a CBT. Interesting on the insurance thing for mopeds though, never knew that.
