Waiting on V5 / starting servicing?
Every time I've bought a bike in the past the V5 has turned up within approx one week. I realise that things at the moment are very out of the ordinary (Covid19, McNuggets shortages, everyone busy doing PE with Joe Wicks instead of working etc) but wondering if I should get on with doing deeper maintenance and servicing on the GSXR that I bought a few weeks ago as the V5 in my name still hasn't appeared.
I've been on the DVLA website and they say it can take up to 4 weeks. It's been about 3.5 weeks now. So, would you go ahead with getting on with working on a bike you don't have the V5 for yet? I've done cheap things like oil (that I had in the garage) and filter. Now looking into swapping the tyres etc. I was hoping to get it on the road , taxed, moted etc at the beginning of May to commute on. I could commute on it with old dried out tyres and old fluids, air filter etc, but would rather use the next few days to get it all fresh and ready and be good to go for May. But hesitant to put any more money into it until I get confirmation that it's officially mine. I am a bit untrusting since being burned on a bike purchase a while back and have no reason to suspect that anything is dodgy this time. Am I being over cautious waiting or should I get on with it? What would you do? |
Re: Waiting on V5 / starting servicing?
It's officially yours without the V5, you own that bike if you paid for it *
The V5 is a registration document, if it doesn't turn up you can apply for a new one (should be free under the circumstances!). * Unless it's nicked. Did you HPI it or buy it anywhere other than under a bridge or at a dock from a one armed man? |
Re: Waiting on V5 / starting servicing?
HPI checked. All clear. Paid the guy with bank transfer and inspected and collected from outside his home on the way back from work. Lots of phone and online communication. No reason to doubt the sale. But then when I got burned I had no reason to doubt it either and now don't trust myself to judge a situation like I used to.
Be good to get on with it as I have a window of time off work the next few days and then am busy again for a while. Might sorn the VFR for May if I get the GSXR on the road. |
Re: Waiting on V5 / starting servicing?
Sonds legitimate and you've even done a HPI check to prove it's legitimate.
I'd crack on, it's yours. DVLA will just be swamped and/or furloughed. Maybe don't sorn the viffer 'til you've seen the V5 (you might need it to tax the gsxr..unless you have the green slip, think you can do it with that.) |
Re: Waiting on V5 / starting servicing?
I have the green slip for the GSXR.

Re: Waiting on V5 / starting servicing?
I'd have no problem getting stuck in with the spanners..

Re: Waiting on V5 / starting servicing?
I got my sv on Sunday, my V5 turned up today (I had ordered and paid for the bike on the Tuesday)
I was very surprised how quickly it turned up. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk |
Re: Waiting on V5 / starting servicing?
Not sure what the problem is, Have you get any receipt for the payment ?, Look on the front of a v5 and it says in big letters THIS IS NOT PROOF OF OWNERSHIP. Need to have it but it's not evidence you own it.

Re: Waiting on V5 / starting servicing?
More looking for advice than there being an actual problem as stated above. As mentioned on this forum in another thread a couple of months ago, I was ripped off quite badly not long ago so getting second opinions in case there's anything I haven't thought of (like last time). I am aware of it not being proof of ownership. It is an indicator that everything has gone through properly though.
Started the work on it now anyway and it's booked for MOT on Monday. Still no V5 though 4 weeks later. I'm guessing I'll be spending a lot of time on hold to the DVLA next week and getting told it's because of furloughed workers. |
