Crash bungs - dangerous?

Hi All

Just want to relate the issue my cousin has had.

Been riding for 49 years on and off, so is no novice, went out on his CBR 1000, whilst turning around in the road and he thinks the bikes engine stalled causing him and the bike to fall. His leg ended up being between the bung and the road, the full weight of the bike went through the bung onto his leg. The force caused both his tibia and fibula to smash. He now has eight rods holding his leg together whilst the swelling reduces so the surgeon can then put his bones together with various metal plates.

Sounds nasty - I suppose it was a bit of a freak accident and if his leg had been either side of the bung instead of right in line with it, that may have helped to keep weight of bike OFF his leg - swings and roundabouts really.

It is a freak accident, a friend of mine crashed and the end of the handlebars ended up jamming him in the ribs, again it's unusual without being impossible. Any part of the bike will hurt you if you're unfortunate enough not to be able to get away from it.

These things are impossible to predict. Without the bung, the full weight of the bike would have been on his leg anyway and could just have easily broken a bone.
