Bike charging issues

Hi all,
Been having issues with my 09 sv650s, a few weeks ago it left me with a flat battery and wouldn't start.
The battery was charged and then I done a few tests:
The battery voltage drops to roughly 10v when cranking.
The battery voltage comes up to about 14.2v when holding revs at 5K however takes a very long time to get to 14.2v (about 15 seconds)
The battery voltage will not go past 13.5v when holding the revs at 5K with the heated grips on.
The stator voltage is about 68v and passed all of the resistance and continuity tests.
The regulator rectifier has passed the diode test.
So I was just wondering if the battery should be getting past 13.5v at 5K as this seems a little low to me.

Hi and welcome. The voltage drop to 13.5 at 5K with the grips on is to be expected as the grips are drawing current. Otherwise the numbers look relatively OK.

How old is the bike's battery? It may just be getting a little tired, or perhaps the grips were left on accidentally which drained the battery down?

The heated grips definitely weren’t left on, but I’ve just checked the manufacturer date of the battery and it’s the start of 2019 so I think that might be the problem.

Although its most likely the battery is on its way out unfortunately you cannot completely write off a RR fault. When testing it the only diodes that can be checked are the rectifiers not the regulators which cant be accessed without dismantling the unit. Even then the diodes that have been checked ok can still give problems under load so its worthwhile putting your multimeter on low range AC volts to see if any ripple is getting through to the battery from the alternator when running.
I have struggled with this problem before and the risk is you put a new battery on and that promptly also fails:x

Its winter it kills older battery's. Everything else looks fine. Its rare that the twin spark sv rr goes bad

Just in case. I don't know if it's the same with the later models but I went to my SV some years ago in my garage and the battery was flat. I'd accidently turned the ignition key and extra slot into the ,"Park " mode which had left the front small bulb and rear bulbs on and I didn't notice :/

Since then I always double check that I've not done this.

HTH :)

I did the above several time, now it's a good close look before I leave it

Any resolution to the issue KyleMacG?
