Electrics - Shocking...
 

I spent nearly two hours sitting on a wall in Streatham High road today waiting for the AA. The problem was that the engine cut out (well, I probably stalled it) at the lights and I couldn't re-start it again.

Anyway, Mr AA came along (turned out to be a sub-contractor) and we quickly established that it was something to do with the starter motor. It seems that the feed from the battery is interrupted somewhere before the starter motor - possibly something to do with the immobiliser (stop sniggering. I mean after the immobiliser has been disarmed).

We managed to start it by running a wire from the battery to the starter motor, disarming the immobiliser and engaging the ignition. My problem now, is that I can't start it again without taking the seat off until the problem is fixed.

OK. I now need to read up on SV electrics a bit and see if it's something I can deal with. Although the info Ive posted here is minimal, does anyone have any good ideas?

Buy Coolgirls bike! Its much better ;)

All joking aside. If you are not a spanner monkey, then get it along to your local bike shop, and get them to remove the imil..the thing, and either install a new one, or leave it off all together. In my experience (USed to fit alrams and things to cars) once they start playing up, then its not worth the hassle of chaing repairs on them.

Funny, that's what CoolGirl said as well... But her bike isn't in Black. How can that be better...

Anyway, I reckon it's a loose connection. Just a matter of finding out where the electricity stops and why. The Immobiliser itself, it seems, is fine (at least, this is what I hope).

It could also be the starter relay - another thing to check. Lots of fun for me tonight...

I agree with Viney, when The ims go they don't come back!! Mate one went on his bandit and after about four months of messing around he got a new one fitted. The mechanic couldn't do anything with the old one it was completely shot!
Save yourself hassle and get it sorted by replacing it (if you think you really need one).

Play the odds and check all of wiring involvied in the ignition circuit, 9 times out of 10 electrical faults are down to a bad connection or a broken/damaged wire. Don't chuck anything in the bin yet! When checking your wiring make sure you inspect all soldered joints as well, they can look OK at a glance but a "dry joint" can be as troublesome as cut wire! If in doubt r-solder all of them, SVGeorge had a similar problem which turned out to be...a dry solder joint! Quick blast of a solder iron and all was well.
