guys,

if getting something shipped from the US, can u avoid import duty by having the item marked GIFT, or is this an urban myth?

any other ways to get bits cheaply from the US?

cheers,

Ben

Bit hit and miss, I've had 3 things shipped as gift, 2 got duty put on them and one didn't.....

I think it's just random, I've had 4 things from the states this year & paid nada on any of it. What qualifies something for duty :?:

When I say 'nada' I mean erm, the items were only worth 10p each, honest! :-$

well by that calculation you must owe oh... 4 x 10p @ 30% duty = 13p then add VAT @ 17.5%... damn... gotta come arrest ya mate!!! lmao

just out of interest... for those whove been charged the duty... did the package come by post (ie with just stamps on) or with a carrier such as dhl/ups???

I got a laptop worth a grand from a private seller. Marked as gift and no duty. It was sent by courier.

I order quite a bit from the States, only been caught once for the tax. Usually the items is sent out as a gift. Always by post, and I had to collect/pay for the one parcel from the Post Office I did get caught with.
