Throttle free-play

Just wondering....

What is the recommended free-play on an SVs throttle? On my Hornet, the manual says 2-6mm. Seems a lot to me :?

Having decided that mine had too much free-play (to the point where I was aware of it in town), I adjusted it to 0mm (without going too far!)and found 2 things:

1. It sure feels funny without a little free-play when rolling on/off
2. At full right-lock, the throttle doesn't snap shut - the last little bit of travel is rather slow

I'll be adjusting so free-play back into it tonight, but will try to get it to the minimum viable setting 8)

What amount of free-play do peeps like on their bike's throttle?

I have 5 mm....if you have too little, then you run the risk of "accidently" accelerating when doing manouvers...... and it also allows for expansion of the cable during differing weather...

i think i read it was about 3-5m could well be wrong,
and willing to accept if i am.

Think it's 2 - 3mm!

I didn't like having any play at first and did the same as you Jabba on my Aprilia RS125, but as soon as I had done it, I realised it was there for a reason, so changed it back again. Still live and learn eh fella.

Yeah, for sure

I think mine will be adjusted to the minimum viable free-play (i.e. 2mm according the manual).

alrite jabba - got the sprockets and chain from the guy you recommended me for a bargin of 50 quid for the kit :) :) was chuffed - i owe u a beer.

i was also having the same problem on my CBR last week - it was coming up to 6mm but that was too much for me, was going to adjust it, but when i got my chain and sprockets fitted it was back down to 3mm which is what i like.

i know it might sound silly - but check your chain and sprockets are ok - these def have a big effect on throttle response (or so i have found)

a new chain and sprockets for me has made the bike feel much much smoother and more responsive :)

I always set the free play so that there is the least possible without affecting throttle position from lock to lock.

i got the dealer to take all the free play out at the last service - there's a tiny amount still there, but not much. No discernable throttle changes from lock to lock or different weather. But it does take some getting used to, even though the slack was really getting on my t*ts beforehand.

I've gotten used to it. It can make the bike very on/off, but that may be my restrictor. I've learned to use the clutch to control the on/off power :?
