Who's next for the ignition advancer tool?

Jonboy? Weegaz? you two were first in the list last time IIRC, let me know if you're still wanting a loan. Anyone else, let me know too :)

Yes please. ;) Just PM'd you.

Exactly what will this do? Did you get the carb balancer btw?

BURNER 14-12-04 08:14 PM

Can't I just use a stock 1.25 rotor puller?

Jonboy wins a lend of the advancer, once the last guy's done with it ;)

Andrew, the ignition advancer's wicked... Don't know how it works exactly, but it's a wee tiny bit of metal the size of a toenail clipping that you stick into the end of something, possibly the crankshaft, and- well, there's dyno charts on the JHS site for it. The part costs £20, but you need a new alternator cover gasket for it, and a special rotor puller tool that cost me £25 IIRC but which is verrrry sloooowly doing the rounds on a permanent lendout...

Basically, a power boost, plus the torque comes on much much earlier in the range. JHS shows a 3hp boost all acrss the rev band, which doesn't totally match my own experience, but then my dyno run in question was made with terrible jetting and so doesn't count. I didn't see anythingon the top end, but the midrange boost is excellent, great for town riding.

May wear the engine faster and increases the likelihood of detonation/preignition/etc, apparently, but I've had absolutely no downsides.

Still no carb balancer, Sid Squid put me off a little as he knows far more about that sort of stuff than me, and then it occurred to me that since it's going in for a rejet once I finally do the cams, the shop'll check all that sort of stuff for me anyway... I'll be looking for an Ebay one, I think.

Absolutely no idea :) There's definately at least one generic rotor puller that works, I got the suzuki one because it's easy to find... You could just use a great big hardened bolt if you find one in the right sizes, after all.

£25- for yours? From Suzuki themselves?
MandP do a 4 size X shape rotor puller for about £19- I think.....

Think so, aye. Couldn't say for sure, but that sounds about right. From a Suzuki dealer, I got the part number from somewhere, SV Rider I think, and ordered it the same way as spares.

Well crimbo is on the way and my "From-me-to-me" gift list is growing.
Need more bike stuff for the toolbox anyway. :D

Know what you mean... Just recently I've aquired a reaaaaaalllly long screwdriver, whose only purpose ever will be to undo the clamp on the front carb :) When I first started meddling with my Virago all I had to hand was a 10-piece socket set from Machine Mart, a couple of adjustables, and whatever dogeared tools I could nick off my dad :) Now I have a whole toolkit marked full of "occasional" tools like stud pullers, screw extractors, centrepunches, oil filter wrenches. I feel like a proper man, Tim Allan style :)
