4k trip, 4k miles on bike, sevice interval 6k........

Different bike I know but same concerns. Your advice most welcome, people.
As in title I'm about to do trip that won't be too shy of 4000 miles and I'm just on 4000 miles on the 12GS. So the 6000 service is slap in the middle of that.

What a PIA. I dont want to have to schedule a service on route as I don't want to be tied down to dates etc and its unlikely I'd get one on spec what with the dealer lead in times Ive been hearing lately.

So I cant decide whether to bite the bullet and just get the service done early, take a chance and leave it until my return, or do so kind of halfway house interim. I'm not so good with home maintenance so paying the dealer to do oil and filter and check pads is pretty much getting on for the service anyhow, I suspect. Although they do some adjustments....I think!

I'm not so much concerned with service affected warranty issues..final drive failures seem to happen service or not.

Advise me guys and gals....

theres no harm (other than financial) in doing the service early. its not so much the milage but more hte interval of the services that important, ie serviceing needed every x miles, if you have a service before you go, , youll have X'000 miles berfore aznother one is needed, i dont think that it matters for warrenty that the services are bang on the milages, more so thatt the intervals havent elapsed and that the corresponding work for each service has been done.

If it was me I would get the service done early, Wont do any harm and then you also have peace of mind that your bike has had a once over before you leave for your mamoth trek

Where are you off to Dr Rich if you dont mind me asking

Through to southern Germany, Czech Rep, nipping into Poland, Slovakia Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, along top of Italy, then home somehow through France

.........probably.

It was pads and things I was more worried about as they dont always follow the rules of service intervals, do they?

I just changed my front pads at 17k, and they still had a fair bit of life left in them. If you check them and they look ok, I wouldn't worry about them.

Brake fluid is put down as being changed every 2 years in the SV manual, but I say thats complete rubbish. I changed the fluid less than a year ago, and when I changed it last week it looked like engine oil, so check that too.

No but it sure is a lot of fun 8)

Have the service done early Rich, that way if there's a breakdown BMW Motorrad won't claim they can't pick you up because you breached their terms and conditions etc and also it could invalidate their warranty (you know they're fussy) and looking on UKGSers it could well be you're going to need it ;).

Also rear pads seem to wear extraordinarily quickly on the GS12 so have those checked too.

There indeeds seems a lot of variability there. if I don't have them changed Ill take a spare set as any tom, **** or igor should be able to change those.

I also think they wear quickly as lots of those tw*** dont know how to die a bike
