Buying a used SV, things to check?
 

I'm hopefully picking up my new SV this weekend. It's a 2001 curvy faired model. It's done around 17k, and from photos, looks in great condition. Any tips on what to check? I've asked the guy to keep the engine cold so I can see how it starts, but anything else you recommend?

Check Front forks for leaks. before and after you have had a ride, as its £25 each side to have the forks re sealed, check for cracks or mends on the top farings. ask if its "been down the road" as they say. just use your common sence. and what ever price hes/shes asking for its to much !! :D knock him down and be propeared to walk away if your unsure. Winter time is around the corner and theres going to be plenty of bargins to be had..

First things first, check the VIN number and engine number against the V5, always :wink:

Check for Signs of lock wire or drilled sump plugs, see if the body work and its fittings look newer than the rest of the bike.
And you should be able to get a better price than that
I got an immaculate K3 with 6k on the clock 6months dealers warranty new tyres 6months tax all for 2.7

Does it run well and is it straight?Try and take someone with you who knows a bit or if they don't can act as a brake on your enthusiasm.Even if the bike is good this can help get the price to where you want it.

If you know the reg get a HPI check done on it.. worth the money for the peace of mind and knowledge that what your buying hasnt had anything horrid happen to it involving insurance companies. :)

Look behind the rear levers and mounting plates to see if there's any damage hidden there. In a big drop, the brackets can drive into the swingarm and leave a mark there. They might repair all the other damage, but that's expenive and difficul to remove so it's a good telltale. The levers often dent the frame but that's less of an issue- that can happen in a parking drop, so doesn't really tell you much.
