Rough running after several months off :(

Hi all.

I started my bike up for the first time this evening after its spent several months sat in my mothers garage. And I think it needs a bit of TLC. Cos she doesnt sound healthy :(

A couple of days ago I plugged her into my optimate3 and this evening after about a minute of turning over she eventually fired up and ran. Woohoo :)

Thing is, there's a very bad backfire problem like shot gun, even if I just try and rev it a little. Whats causing that?

I have to be honest and say even when I did ride her earlier this year it was few and far between weeks. I've just had so much other stuff going on.

I suppose what I'm really asking is what sort of checks/maintenance should I be looking at doing to get her running tip-top. And what on earth could be causing that backfire! Oh and I think my chain may need a bit of TLC too.

Unfortunately I cannot go out for a ride to blast things thru, cos I have no MOT yet and she isnt taxed either, they are on the to do list :)

Any advice appreciated. Oh and the mileage is just over 7K, and I think overdue a service, although on the plus side I was very religious will top quality oil changes done by yours truly.

Could well be stale fuel - in my experience, unleaded fuel tends to go 'off' after anymore than a couple of months.

Try draining the tank and refilling.

Oh and check the airfilter incase there is a mouse nest in there

Yes,stale fuel. You may have a bit of condensation in it too so drain the fuel right out.May be worth pulling the plugs for cleaning too.Slap some oil all over the chain, and that might save it.Lub all cables and linkages and check tyres.Should have done it all before you put it away but you don't need me to rub that in do you? :)

Wow didnt realise fuel would go off like that
I'll get the tank drained and stick some fresh in.
I'm gonna give the bike a good going over while I've got a few days off over Christmas.

I know I should of done all this stuff months ago
