BMW F800
For the last few months all I've read about is how the new BMW F800 is going to be a rival for the SV650! Well now the prices have been leaked I don't see how it can be classed as a rival, basic model is £6500!
Is there anybody who is going to look at an SV650 and then think hang on , I think the BMW is a bargain at £2k more! I think BMW are deluding themselves, £6500 gets a lot of motorcycle, and more importantly it buys a lot better than an F800! |
The F800ST (first pictures just coming out now), which is a fully faired version of this with optional hard panniers could be tempting to people looking for a smaller/cheaper Sprint ST/1200RT/Pan European. £6500 is nearer the price of a Honda Dullsville than those sort of bikes and I'd take this beemer over that any day of the week.
You also have to bear in mind there are quite a few riders who will only buy BMWs. I can see this being "a bit of fun" for a middle aged bloke who already has a beemer. All that considered, I agree that this isn't going to tempt many people away from an SV at that price, particularly when the SV650s looks a lot better, has had the faults sorted out and can be had for £4000, brand new, tops. |
BMW were supposed to be aiming this at the TDM market (which is seemingly very big in europe) I still think its overpriced for what it is IMHO

When you can pick up most brand new litre sportsbikes (e.g. 2005 fireblade £7199 at DK and they're not the cheapest out there) for a few hundred quid more, it's hard to see where BMW have spent the money.

F800ST
I am getting the impression that those in the UK are really not that satisfied w/ the BMW F800. I am a female rider in the US and the bike hasnt made it here yet, but until I started reading these threads, I was pretty excited about getting the F800 here in the US. Currently I ride a Suzuki Bandit 1200S and love it, but I was looking for a lighter sport tourer. Any suggestions?

Competitors don't have to be equivalently priced, especially when the product itself doesn't just sell on price like the SV does. There's plenty of people who like the SV package, apart from the budget nature, and that's where the BM competes directly with it.
