Chain problem?

Had the bike up on the paddock stand today and now that the scottoiler is fitted, thought id run the chain on the stand so set the bike into first, slowly let out the clutch and watched it go round. Noticed that the chain would sometimes spring up upsetting the flow of the chain. Is this because the shock is fully out and so the chain is slacker, or is it because the chain has a tight spot so iits knackered?

I would have thought if it was a tight spot it would have done it every cycle of the chain in the same spot & not every now & then, with the bike on a paddock stand the shock is still compressed a bit as you are lifting the weight of the bike by the swingarm, try rotating the back wheel slowly in small stages by hand & lifting the chain you will soon see if you have a tight spot, also this is probably a dumb question but is it propperly adjusted.

It's because the bike is running on tickover (which is a little lumpy). Open the throttle a smidge and it will all smooth out.

I agree with scoobs, mine does this too but never really bothered me too much (except before i got my scottoiler and used to wax the chain with the engine running... i know its a bit dodgy but i've still got all my fingers.)

As the others said, plus most of the load is indeed off the shock (static sag is generally tiny) so the chain is alot looser than it would be if you were riding.

ive checked the chain and it doesnt seem to need adjusting when off the paddock stand. Between 30-40mm right?

You are also running the wheel round with almost no resistance, open the throttle a bit and add a touch of back brake to smooth it out. Difficult to do this and check the chain too I know.... and be careful.

Is it really a good idea to run the back wheel whilst on a stand? I'm not sure I would do it!

Helps with lubing, but be bloody careful. There is at least one person on here who has lost a digit doing just that.
