Removing lower fairings for washing
I don't wash my bike very often, not been washed in 2006 yet. In the autumn I doused the bike in ACF75 protector gunk, happy to let the muck sit on top of that. But sometime soon I will need to give her a proper clean, and I can see loads of muck around the radiator and engine that'll be be hard to get at with the lower fairings. Do folk just wash round these or is it better to take the fairing off before you spring clean.
Any idea how long it takes to get em off and on (mines a K3 with OE lowers)? |
I take mine off every now & again for a propper clean also when i have to polish the front down pipe.
It takes between five & ten minutes to remove them, think it's three small bolts, 1 large bolt + metal plate & a few plastic push pins at the bottom. Happy cleaning. |
Call me lazy but one of the reasons for getting my lowering fairing set was to save me the trouble of cleaning the engine.
As a fair weather rider it won't get that bad on mine but its so much easier to clean the fairing and anyone buying my bike off me will most probably prefer that the ugly engine bits are hidden away as most people are obsessed with plastic on bikes these days. I will still wipe my exhaust over with WD40 or something every time I wash the bike to stop it rusting. |
You do realise that the WD40 burns off in seconds when you switch the bike on?
if you're going to leave the engine dirty, get it good and protected before you do... ACF50 or similiar, and lots of. |
cleaning
Yes, I take off the lowers about once a month to clean the motor. I've also fabricated a plate out of aluminium to protect the motor more than the standard bit of rubber.

have had mines on for approx 2 years and never needed to take them off to clean it, just soak it with muc off then time it exactly as per the instructions, takes exactly the same time to down a 330ml bottle of miller  then set about it with a pressure washer, sensibly of course, never over do the pressure but the long nozzle gets in to all the nooks and crannies and hey presto, clean bike & engine
