recommend me an isp

OK I need as new service provider. Not DSL as I cannot get a dsl service. Everyone offers and on "checking" decline. until BT offer fibre to the doorstep I am screwed.

My current service is a 10 Mb from telewest but at present they are messing me about, I have a dhcp assigned address as they will not sell me a static address and every day over the past week my modem has been remotely rebooted and come up with a new address.

This buggers up my VPNs. I have to go onto 6 sites to mod their routers and 4 days during the week is getting silly. Telewest take the view that I am not contracted to buy a static address (That they will not sell) so whats my problem.

So where can I buy a non dsl internet service of about 8-10Mb with a static address for £500/year. Suggestions on the back of a postage stamp to...

nowhere unless you're in an area with LLU'ed exchanges.

Have to say your stuck with Telewest for now. Try calling NTL and ask them about static IP's wont do you any good at the moment but as NTL have just bought |Telewest it might give you some indication as to what Telewest might do in the future.

TBH I think Telewest are the best ISP I have had by a long way. Having been with BT (utter sh*te), Plus.Net (pain in the ****), and a few smaller ones all having connection problems.

I switched to 4mb a few month back and not 3 days later they offered a free upgrade for 3 months. I rang them expecting to be given the run around. The guy instantly apolagised and said I would receive the free 3 month upgrade. If that was BT I'd still be on the phone now.

I have to say i've had no problems with my NTL connection at all. In fact its because its been so reliable that i moved to voip only.

Yep, that's about it. Easynet will have a new service soon, offering Ethernet from the exchange, based on 10 or 100Mb services, but your exchange still needs to be DSL "ready"...

So I reckon your stuffed, unless you ask about a "business" package from Telewest, but then the price will go through the roof. Wholesale price of 2Mb fibre from TW is about £2500 PA, plus up to £5k install. So, what your getting is actually good value, it just doesn't suit your requirements.

Strangely enough I was talking to a neighbour yesterday. He is about to install a DSL service. I told him everyone had refused me as my connection was out of spec. Yet nobody had told him there may be a problem.

From what I can gather I am too far from the DSL enabled exchange at Bamber Bridge (About 3 miles away as the crow flys).

As far as LLU is concerned I no longer have an active BT line. The copper cables (Voice and ISDN) still runs to the house, Would this be a problem. I never want to go back to a BT telephone service as I use VOIP and the ISDN was cancelled 3 years ago when I was able to install a VPN connection into work (Saved about £500 a month in call costs)
