oops

think i may have put to much oil in the SV - bout 20miles after topping up the SV has spluttered to a stop and now won't start - any ideas / comments??

What sort of SV is it, Curvey or pointy.

When you say spluttered to a stop what exactly do you mean, did it die gently or was it sudden power loss.

What happens when you try and start it, have you got any dashboard lights ? does it turn over ?

well it was coughing and splutterin - then i got pulled over by the feds - probably cos i was looking shifty trying to keep the bike going (3o'clock in the mornin tryin to get home from work) then when the old bill had done one it wouldn't start - now it has dashboard lights but won't start - its a curvy x-reg model. meanwhile my latest ride - http://upload4.postimage.org/89244/RML_sm.jpg

Have a look in the airbox to see if it's full of oil.If the engine has chucked excess oil up the breather pipe it could have clogged the air filter.

cheers - any more ideas people???

How much oil did you add? How do you know there's too much?

An SV can have a surprising amount of extra oil in it and run just fine - smokily, but fine.

Was it raining? Had you recently got fuel? Did it feel 'misfirey' or 'spluttery', has it been a git to start for the last week? Does it turn over at normal speed and not start or just not turn over at all?

C'mon man, details details.

If overfilling causes oil to go into the airbox then there is always the chance the plugs have oiled up, this could be a cause of your spluttering/misfire.

Have you checked the oil level. Can you see it in the sight glass and is it between the markers where the level should be. I've over filled mine a couple of times. Each time its been fine if a little smokey. The one thing it did do was make the gear change stiff. Have you noticed anything like that ?

What happens when you try and start it ? Does it turn over OK, or wont the starter motor turn the engine over ?

Note, to check the oil level the bike should be level (not on sidestand) and have been run for a bit and left to stand, if it's not run for a bit it will read high anyway.

How much did you put in?

LondonLad 29-03-06 09:51 AM

put 500mls in. has been running fine up to then. when i rode it before she dies it was coughing and splutterin but not smokeing. now shes trying to start but just can't do it. will have a look in the airbox this arvo and see whats there.
