Where to buy sheet steel
Hi, going to have a bash at the tail tidy from http://www.sv650.tk/ and it recommends using 2mm steel, can I find this!!! Found some 1mm at B&Q but Homebase, Wicks and a few other DIY places came up blank. Any suggestions? I am in the Bournemouth area. Cheers

I did the same thing from his diagram. I used steel, as my one is now damaged i will be doing it again in ally.
I was recomended to use ally as the steel wil rust easly. |
I was wondering about ally is it as simple to paint? Any suggestions where to buy it?

I've got stuff from this guy before.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRAND-NEW-2mm-...QQcmdZViewItem This bit is enough for two though! I'm sure he would give you something more to the size if you ask. |
iv made it from 1mm steel and now it looks a bit rusty(6 months later)was painted as well.have to re-do it in ally

Did mine in 2mm Ally plate last summer.
How to paint using Halfrauds sprays: Get some light grit sandpaper and get faint scratches on ally surface ALL OVER, spray on a coat of metal primer (white worked best) and leave to dry, buff out imperfections and coat again, buff out imperfections and apply colour (i used satin black) and let dry, buff out any imperfections (shouln't be any really now) apply another coat....leave to dry for 30 mins or so then add 2 coats of clear laquer. Bish...bash...bosh...jobs a good un' I modified the design though and made my own plate hanger/ indy mount 8) Not had a single problem with it. |
You really need to use a purpose aluminium etch type primer. Other primers tend not to take properly (to do with the oxide layer).
These are pretty easily available, if B&Q can't help then certainly somewhere like Autopaint (look in phone book, branches all over) or similar will come up with an aerosol. |
Use ally, if you want the paper pattern let me know as I have a few printed off, cost you the price of a stamp.

Cheers ally it is, just remembered a mate is back in the bodyshop so will get him to give it a paint.
If the printout is single sheet then yes please better than my selotaped version. PM me. Cheers all |
Try a caravan repairers for sheet ali. They get through loads of it and if they've had to cut out a window, there would be a tailtidy's worth of scrap which would probably be no use to them at all. Only problem is a) it may have a textured surface. b) being part of a caravan you would be limited to 50mph and only able to travel on sunny weekends.
