Better a little baggy than too tight:

1. You don't want your movement restricted
2. You might find it a little warmer as the lining won't be crushed thereby losing some of the insulating properties
3. You'll be less likely to feel rain and hail smashing against you; the feel-good factor

Just my view

If you didn't try a back protector with the jacket, you could probably fit one in comfortably now.

too late, ive just taken the xxl back & swoped it 4 a xl

Huh.
I sort of think exactly the oposite... for much the same reasons.
I like it more or less tight over my shoulders when I am on the bike reaching. I dont move my arms about a huge amount on the bike in reality.
I find the less air you have washing about the better. (In really cold weather I want almost no 'open' air spaces, everything is strapped tight.
Rain... yeah, if its baggy, the rain sort of pools, and then when you move you get a big spill. I just want the rain to run off..

I dunno. I like my jacket to be just fitting me. It will stretch if needs be.
