In a debate with someone need 2nd opinions

ok so say your on a main road, going onto a side street if you are doing approx 20mph before you turn into a street where you can see that there are no cars on it, and your close to the median (optimal turn position) is 20mph too fast?

WTF?

Is it wet?
Is it dry?
How sharp is the corner?
Is it day light?
Is it nighttime?
Are there 3,000 people on the pavement celebrating Notting Hill Carnival?
Is is a school entrance?
What road signs are there?
Whats the speed limit?
Are you riding a bike, driving a car, pedalling a rickshaw?
Have you got a pillion?

You might gather there are a few variables to consider. Therefore, you will not get a straight answer.

and don't forget, how wide is the sideroad?

20 MPH too fast to turn? Or too high a speed to be legal?

Physically you could make the turn, legally also.

I'm with Red Ones on this.

How long is this piece of string I'm holding? Wait, I know, from the middle to the end twice, right?

Apologies for the sarcasam, but that debate of yours will last longer than the "What came first, the chicken or the egg?"

Dinosaurs were being born in eggs long before chickens were alive!

EDIT: Dare I ask why you're looking at your speedo instead of the road?

Assuming that there are no pedestrians, no parked cars, not near a school, that you can see round the corner past buildings that might be on the corner, there are no man-hole covers in the middle of road, that you and your bike a physically capable of making the turn, etc, etc............ then the simple question to ask your self is:

"Can I stop on my side of the road in the distance ahead that I can see to be clear"

If the answer is "No" then you're going to fast. You should also bear in mind that at 20mph half way round the turn if you have to stop quickly your bike may stand up and spit you off.

In an urban area, with all those things that I listed at the top of this post both possible and likely then the real world answer is that 20mph is too fast.
