Randomly stalling! :O

Hello all!!

Well I have had my SV now for about a month or so, and its great fun! :D

I have a small problem that has only happened twice but if it happens at the wrong time will be very dangerous!

The bike seems to cut out and stop all together when I am riding along and just in the process of changing gear. (I think)

The first time it happened I had just turned right into a road and was shifting up from First to second let the clutch out and the whole bike went dead (like u stalled it) and i left a 6ft skid mark on the road because it was in gear (i dont wanna say what was in my pants!! ) weather was bright, dry, and warm and the bike had been out on a 100mile trip.

The second time i was just going along the road, changed up, I think, because i had just overtaken a bus. And it stalled/stopped again. This time I felt the bike stall and started the engine whilst drifting along  and hadnt released the clutch. It was wet but the bike was hot after bleeing around the edinburgh bypass.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I think I may be shifting down into 1st or a lower gear and then the back wheel locking up and then stalling as the back wheel is running to fast for the engine? But i cant be sure?

Anyone know anything else?

Cheers

What's your idle sppeed in revs?

Kate 13-10-06 12:27 PM

Do you have an after-market can on the bike? If you have and you haven't had the engine-remapped properly, then this can happen (happened to my SV K3).

It's a curvy with standard can... Not sure about the filter though.

Me not know though. I had something similiar happen once, but I'd bumped the killswitch  Phoned the RAC as well ;)

When it happens, do you have any idea what revs you're holding?

Duck-man 13-10-06 02:11 PM

Idle sped is just above 1000rpm (according to the dial) when warm

It has a standard can but does have a K&N air filter i didnt know about until after the service! :D

But I dont think its that.

I would say that the idle is a tad low

northwind 13-10-06 03:27 PM

Yeah, doubt it's the K&N- you might be a tad lean but not that badly. But idle's too low- when fully warm it's supposed to be, what is it, 12-1300? I have mine at 1300 anyway, seems happiest there, but then mine's maybe not a good example :) The adjuster's down the left hand side of the bike between the frame, it's a wee black dial. Should be connected to the frame in a little bracket but they often aren't. Just give it a wee spin and see what happens ;)

Cheers :D will it give it ago the night :D

I had the same problem with my SV650 K5, too low an idle casued exactly the symptoms you describe, as the others suggest below. W/O checking the manual I think the idle should be 1200 rpm or so.

I have an '01 with a full Hindle exhaust and it's stalled whilst on the move three times in the last two years. The last time, I was turning in an intersection and it stalled as I pulled the clutch in to change down to second. I haven't a clue what causes it. I've been riding for over forty years so I'm pretty sure it's not my fault!!!!
