Brake Pedal
 

Hi,
After a low speed spill I'm trying to fix my bike. In the fall the brake pedal on the end of the rod snapped off. I have a few questions (some very dumb as I'm kinda new to bikes in general) and was wondering if anyone around here knew the answers.

a) Can i just replace the rod and pedal section or do i need to replace the entire right foot mechanism?

b) Are the gear change / rear brake mechanism's known as rearsets? if not what are they known as, and what are rearsets?

c) I've posted in stuff wanted but so far to no avail, any recommendations as to where I can buy a pedal/rod (or whatever I need to fix my back brake) and how much it should cost?

Hi in answer I came off again a low speed spill on some diesel as I was going into a petrol station and broke the brake lever.

a) you can just replace the lever, only trouble I had was getting the hook that holds the return spring and brake light swtich off as the screw was jammed in, had to put it in a vice and use an impact driver in the end.

b) rearsets are brackets which move the footrests back to make a more racing style of riding position and usuyally have a variety of posions to put the foot pegs to suit the size of the rider.

c) got my replacement off ebay with a new righthand footpeg for £40, the brake lever from Suzuki new is about the same price.

You can buy a low temperature aluminium welding kit, can be done with a blowtorch, I have previously used this to repair the standard monkey metal pegs levers etc. Try the dreaded e-bay.

I like the idea of welding it back on but I've never welded anything in my life. what sort of welding machine do I need? I'd like one that I can just plug into the mains (like a soldering iron (I've done that before :D )), and that didn't cost too much. My exhaust took a bit of a knock in the fall as well, it's cracked open on one side, do you recon I could fix my exhaust with a welding kit as well?

Nope the kit is just for aluminum and all its alloys. the process is a little like brazing that is you need a blow torch and follow the directions - wont work on steel.

I wouldn't bother welding anything. Either replace the brake lever or drill a hole and put a bolt through it to give you your "end" back on the pedal.

As the post above says, you can buy a new brake lever easily enough, I think the OE one for my K3 cost £40 or so when I had my off. I'm assuming you've got an SV....

Changing it is a little tricky as you have to take the footpeg (the bit you put your boot on!) off the hanger (the flatish aluminium casting that bolts to the frame. The way I did mine was unclip the rear brake springs and linkages (easy) and unbolt the hanger from the frame (easy again, allen key you need is in your toolkit). But then you need to take the footpeg off the hanger, and thats a pain as the folk at Suzuki use the strongest loctite in the world and you'll need a big allen key that isn't in the kit. I took mine to a local mechanic and used his vice and 2 foot torque bar to unstick my one. But once you've undone that its easy, slip the new brake lever on to the footpeg, bolt it back up and put it all back together. 15 minutes job if you have the tools.

£40 is a bit steep, I'd like to have a replacement rather than a bolt through it though. Any idea if there's anywhere I can get a cheaper replacement? The folding-in gear lever suggested (accidentally) in another thread was only £30 :shock:

Dont know how soon you need the parts Steve but it might be worth you having a look at Rufforth autojumble on Saturday 2nd Dec. plenty of cheap 2nd hand bits there as youre in the york area.
