SV Maintanence
 

Hi having just bought my first bike (SV650s) I need to learn what daily/weekly checks I need to make to keep this bike happy?

I have worked out where the petrol goes, but much more than that I don't know.

What I would like is some advice on what i need to be checking? how often? and how to make any of the suggested checks?

Check the oil

Hold bike upright(get someone to help you) and check the little cirular window on the lower right hand side of the engine. You should see silver. A full siver disc type thing is bad, top up with oil. Half to a 1/4 of silver disc is about right. No silver disc...clean window...still no silver disc. Too much oil. To fill up, remove cap above the window near the frame...Marked 10w40..and thats the oil you need. DO NOT put car oil in, but buy proper bike oil.

Also check tyre pressures weelky. As a starting point, 33psi on the front and 36psi in the rear. This shouls see you good.

Adjust chain. At tightest point, no more/less than about an inch and a half (30mm ish) play. If you do not know how to do this, then find someone local that can show you.

Get yourself a haynes manual. It gives you the checks and how to do them every week/month etc.

Enjoy your ride and get yourself down to a SELKent meet every other wednesday...

get a haynes manual you can get them on the bay for less than a tenner or there is normaly somone selling one in for sale

they are very good & you will be able to do a lot of things yourself(oil change,plugs etc etc)

Also what type of SV do I have? It is an 03 reg faired version.

What is the difference between K3, K4 etc.?

That's a K3 I think. The SUZUKI graphic on the tank was replaced by a small S emblem on the K4 bike.

You appear to have a Suzuki SV650S K3 :D (models are easy on pointy SVs, its just the year)

There isn't a whole lot of difference between the K3 and newer models of the SVs tbh, the subframe is slightly different and the frame is painted black etc in later models but overall, they are pretty similar.

I have noticed that you appear to have a dirty downpipe!! I can personally recommend the Comma Alloy Cleaner that you can get from Halfords - http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...tegoryId=31287

Real easy - just spray it on, wait a sec and then wipe off. Keep it away from your paintwork though, its powerful stuff.
