Gear/Clutch problem on new SV
 

Hi, i just got my new SV650s a couple of weeks back and am having a wee bit of bother when sitting in neutral at traffic lights etc. When i to shift into 1st gear to move off, sometimes it doesn't want to go into gear and keeps springing back to neutral. I've even tried moving off in 2nd gear and the same problem happens. Not all the time , but enough to make it a pain in the ****.

I know i can take it back to the dealer , but just wondered if this was an easy fix. Apologies for lack of knowledge

check the basic stuff first.

Chain that you chain is at the correct tension and that its nicely lubed, also check that the oil level isnt over filled. Also worth checking your clutch cable is adjusted properly. If all those are fine then take it back to the dealer.

also make sure your shift linkage is clean and lubed & properly adjusted

the shifter & linkage is the most abused mechanical part of you bike, finesse with your foot is hamfisted at best, its right at the lowest point where it picks up road grime and dampness

Thanks Guys, soory but my bike knowledge is v/poor, what do you mean by shift linkage ?

It's a K6, new.

I ride a K6 (new last Aug) & I didn't have this issue. I'd take it to the dealers as a warranty issue, stick to your guns if they try to fob you off, but tread gently & be friendly & they'll probably have it sorted out without costing you a penny.

That's what I'd do anyway.

On your way to the dealership, stick it in neutral at the lights, put your foot on the gear lever, and slowly let the clutch out. If it drops into gear, the gearbox is just wearing in still & it should go away in time.

If you're concerned, ask the dealership, and don't tell them what I've said until they tell you.

Try letting the clutch out a little.

I find it easiest to get into 1st with the clutch slightly out - not to bite point tho.

Mr Sid Squid of this very forum said this is pretty common on bikes, so I am not worried about mine, which is also a K6, with 2800 miles on it.

Note that it simply is a feature of constant mesh 'boxes and isn't a fault, that said once a few more miles are on the bike it's frequency is often reduced, that however is down to the clutch rather than any change in the 'box.
