Blue paint
Hey all,
Apart from the obvious place (a Suzuki dealer) where can i buy spray paint for my SV? I am thinking of buying a belly pan and spraying it myself :D Any tips on what paints to use? Base coats? main colour? Lacquer? cheers |
I re-sprayed a fairing panel to grand candy blue. Used- http://www.bike-paint.co.uk/
It was about £40 for the colour matched spray and laquer. It's really hard to get the paint the same shade, darkness etc of the original colour though.... |
Also, belly pans are very exposed, so don't go cheap on the laquer- singlepack or cellulose isn't tough, it'll chip in no time. THough you could stick some venturefilm or somethign over the front to protect it better...
|
And some colours are two-pack paints too...which are even harder to do.
|
Its a candy blue one :D and i was looking at that site http://www.bike-paint.co.uk/ too :D
Northy, what is singlepack or cellulose ?? |
2 different sorts of rubbish clear coat :) What you get in Halfords is cellulose. Soft, and not very solvent resistant. Singlepack (or 1K) is a bit better, but still very soft. It's acrylic, I think.
Thing is, two-pack paints and laquers contain isocyanates (I think, something like that) which are what they sound like, bad juju. Clearcoat's the hardest part to do right, and also probably the most important part, if you ask me... I'm not sure what's the best clear coat you can get in a can, I'd say 1k is better than cellulose though. |
If you want I can send you a pic of the results of my respray attempt at that colour... From a distance it doesn't look too bad but close up it looks wrong
From that bike paint site, the candy blue is a two-pack colour. You have to prime, then spray on a base coat silver, then a top coat blue. Doing this to get an exact factory colour match is ridiculously hard. I couldn't manage to get that deep gloss that the factory plastics have either. This was from my experience anyway. Though as your spraying a belly pan, which isn't too close to any other bodywork, you could get away with subtle colour differences. |
That would be cool if you could send me a photo of it! :D
cheers for the help! |
I was tempted to check out just how close this is
TBH I would not mess about with aerosols or 1k paints. granted you need to protect yourself from the nasties when using two pack, but the paint colour/sheen is far better with 2k paint. But no longer owning a blue bike I never got the chance |
Ok, I'll take some tomorrow, when there's a decent amount of daylight available. Then send you them after.
