final drive gear ratio
hello,
i have just ordered a new chain and sproket with a different gear ratio, i made the calculations to work out the increase in thrust for different ratios using excel, got bored at work, and i thought i would share it with you http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...gearratios.jpg the table is made up from sprokets avalible from www.bandcexpress.co.uk gear ratios highlighted in red will increase thrust, and therefore acceleration, ratios highlighted in green will decrease thrust, but will increase road speed. ive also included a table for you naked people out there |
Re: final drive gear ratio
I went through a similar exercise when deciding on what to put on my curvy, but did the overall ratios in each gear.
I wanted a more relaxed feel so went for 16/44 on a SVS K1. When you look at what it does in the big picture, 16/44 puts the new higher ratios pretty much halfway between the old ratios, so for example the new 4th becomes like an old "4 1/2th", 5th like "5 1/2th" and the new 6th is half a ratio of overdrive. You just end up riding differently, often I will use 4th when I would have been in 5th before, so I'm actually using a lower ratio. I like the more relaxed cruising in top now, and don't try for 7th which I always used to. Each to their own though, if you do a lot of heavy traffic/town riding you'll probably want to go the other way. |
Re: final drive gear ratio
