Contaminated Fuel

Well- all my fuss about my cylinder cutting out and here's a coincidence-

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6405051.stm

Yep - it happened after I'd bought standard 95RON unleaded from the Tesco garage in Tolworth.

The petrol's been and gone now, so I've got no comeback, but certainly explains it over the HT lead/spark plug and the power issues. The bike behaved fine today in a gale and driving rain on the A3.

Another problem solved.

Sweet!

If you've got the receipt I'd still try and get your hard earned back. You never know, stranger things have happened;)

I'm so disorganised, I may even still have the receipt. The breakdown callout puts the fault to a regulator issue theough- so not sure if I can do it or even be arsed for £12 or whatever it was... Lazy I know, but so much on the plate at the moment that it's not a priority.

I'm just happy there's an explanation for the trouble I had...

Yeah it's good to have a solution to a problem - Steer clear of supermarket fuels me thinks:smt045

Hey, you and me both mate. Mine started running a little funny back when we had the freezing fog and initialy i put it down to that. I only use the Tescco on my route in an emergency as the Total near work is cheaper.
The the snow came and it still ran a little funny so i put it down to that.
Ran like a bitch for ages and i even took it to have the carbs balanced as i thought they were out.
Thats after i'd done an oil and spark plug change myself.
Our very own Sid Squid had a quick look and listen to it last friday at soho and said "sounds like somethings contaminated the fuel" And that was my fettling plan for the weekend but it rained a lot.
Monday i had to fill up again and the problems now gone.

Bloody Tesco! I'll find my reciept, or bank statement as i pay by card, as well as my mechanics charges and if the dates tally up they are gonna get a stink letter from me!!!

But hearing this tonight on CH4 news made me feel the same as Donal... at least i now know what the hell was up with it.

My lad filled up his SV near Brum on Sunday with(he thinks)Texaco fuel and it has run rough ever since. It may be nought to do with it,but there seems to be a lot of it about.

Re: Contaminated Fuel

Aparently the damage it does is to the Lambda sensors, as most bikes dont have them then all should be fine apart from bad running.

Lambda sensors are suseptable to damage from a very rich mixture and leaded fuel.

So How Do We Avoid This Dodgy Fuel?

I think I'm gonna stick to Shell V-Power for a while. Keep away from supermarket filling stations?

On GMTV news again this morning and it seems to be a country wide thing.
I think i'll stick to filling up from my local Total for a while and see how that goes. If their fuel makes it run rough again then i'll try another brand.

TSM, didyou use a Tesco around the time of the freezing foggy stuff or are you still putting that down to the cold moist air? Just wondering as both our bikes ran bad at that time but yours seemed to recover whereas mine just got sicker. And i'm sure my toothless sprocket couldnt have caused that ;)
