Brakes - sintered or not
 

So - I've looked at a few websites and I see that there are 'sintered' pads, organic pads and some other stuff.

I guess the normal thing to do is to buy the best that you can afford, however *adopts Manuel voice* I know nothing *voice off* about what a sintered pad is :smt102 . Prices seem to range from about 14 golden coins to 25 of the shiny blighters (or thereabouts) for one pair of front pads.

Before I click 'buy', I thought it would be a good idea to find out what it is I need to get - I'm only a commuter and occasional longer run - not a racer.

I await patiently...and brakeless!! :|

sintered or 'HH' pads (which are made of metal) are generally considered to have better performance at the expense of wearing your disks out quite a lot more quickly

for most use organic (ie non-metallic) is fine & won't wear your expensive disks out

I'm using 'HH' can't say i notice any difference over the standard pads especially commuting so I would say save your money and buy the cheeper ones!

Yeah - cheers guys. I've been looking around at other posts and intobikes .co.uk etc...set of organic pads for under fifty nicker seems about do-able...no point in wearing out the discs quicker for the sake of glamour and even harsher braking...those little stainless steel pins/clips that lock in the bolt that holds the pad in place - tried looking on fleabay but no joy - I imagine that's the sort of consumable that yer avridge dealer would have loads of...just in case I knacker 'em getting 'em out.

"Sintering" is the word used to describe the way the materials are made; two solids are mixed together and then blasted with heat to cause a chemical reaction, producing a ceramic material, in this case, your brake-pad. Ceramics are hard-wearing, heat resistant, corrosion resistant. Where braking materials are concerned, this means they retain their shape and consistency, giving you good braking all the time (least from the pads point of view)

I wouldn't run sintered pads on my SV, purely for reasons of economy. As others have said, the real cost for this upgrade isn't the £7-8 more than normal pads, it's the fact you will get through discs noticeably quicker, which are more in the region of a few hundred pounds.

sintered pads also dont work as well at low temps so if you are just doing short hops they dont give any bennefit in braking ability, its only once they have got nice and hot that there is any noticable difference. No bennefit for the road but better for racing.
