Irritating popup in windows
I'm getting a really irritating popup (steady....) telling me that Spyware is running and I need to download...blah blah blah. I havent and I dont!
Its from an anti-spyware firm (alledgedly, cant remember which one. If I ok it tells me all this BS but then pops up again at inconvenient moments. How do I rid myself of this. Antivirus etc up to date, Spybot SD all done etc, just cant rid myself of this. |

Re: Irritating popup in windows
You sir have the very annoying Spyware Quake. You got a little logo in the bottom right that changes from a ? to a kinda no entry sign too right?
Ive been trying to clean this off my brothers machine last couple of weekends so have some up to date advice. Apparently Panda Software's online scan can find and clean this, if you do a google search there is a lot out there about removing it manualy BUT BEWARE the annoying virus also brings back results from its own sites to further infect your machine so dont use any of the sites that claim to clean it with a simple tool as all they do is downlaod and instal a trojan instead. There are several Registry things it also instals to reload itself on startup so you gotta find the right advice online. SOme of the forums that are returned in the search are great, some are pointless unless you wanna register and post a HijackThis log for someone to look over and advise on. Lastly some sites suggest downloading a tool called Smitfraud. Now call me para but anything with "fraud" in its name sounds illogical to me to install on my comp. Further some virus/malware/adware checkers (like adaware find it as a threat and suggest you remove it. But i havent looked into that one at any length tbh. If you are stuck mate then PM me and i'll happily suggest the sites that i found info from for you as i gotta go back to his and sort his out again tomrrow night as now AOL wont launch no matter what. But he had more than just the Spyware QUake thing on there so i dont think its that thats stoping AOL running. hth :D |
Re: Irritating popup in windows
Spybot had detected some registry changes. I didnt think I have seen the @ symbol though. Ive got up to date McAfee work antivirus running with the latest updates so this is damn annoying.

Re: Irritating popup in windows
Another trick is in the advanced section of spybot is a option to inspect your start up files. This is normally where these 'permament' pop-up start up from, running in the background when your PC start. There is a pop-out tab on the right that gives you more information about what each item in the list does.

Re: Irritating popup in windows
I had something similar, f*cking irritating isnt it. I used a combination of adaware, Spyware Doctor, and editing the registry and I got rid of it eventually. Took me four hours to clean all the cr*p off my laptop though and then it still wasnt right. I got f*cked off with it in the end and wiped it and re-installed XP.

Do you get a little window lke the one shown here that pops up in the bottom right corner? On that page there is some info about manualy removing it but i didnt find many of those registry entries in my comp when i searched for them so i decided to ignore the advice on that page completely, Afterall if they are trying to trick you into downloading a trojan they sure as hell aint gonna give the right advice in the article right? |
Re: Irritating popup in windows
I dont think it is that.
Its this. A particularly irritating ad to a non-funcioning program. http://www.2-spyware.com/review-neos...-security.html Look like I'll have to get IT support to sort it. Pain. |
Re: Irritating popup in windows
Oh. Ok, ruled that one out then eh?
Good luck figuring out what it is then mate. Can you not send some info on it to McAfee and report it? Maybe they know about it and are working on an update? Either way the bas***s who come up with these things should be be slowly and painfully tortured imho. |
