Theoretical acceleration question

If you take a bike that can power wheelie in first like an SV, and a bike like a GSXR1000, assuming they both have the same tyres, and because you obviously don't want to go head over heels, do they both accelerate at the same speed in first gear? i.e. are they limited to the same acceleration due to the front wheel coming up?

Re: Theoretical acceleration question

No, because the geometry and weight distribution of the bikes are not the same.

Disagree.

The SV is down geared significantly compared to the GSX-R1000 so the difference in first gear won't be huge.

Not exactly the same but similar. It's the reason why you see more 1/4 mile times than 0 - 60 times, the 1/4 shows more of a difference. 0 - 60 is really a test of how easy it is to launch.

The new sports bikes will do 0 - 60 between 3.5 - 3.0 seconds, doesn't matter if it's a 600 or a thou. A SV can probably do a time like this too, if you can get the clutch out fast enough and keep the front down.

yes- thats why longer swingarms and wheelie bars are used in drag racing- and also why the triumph rocket III has a faster 1/4 mile time than a hayabusa. Geometry and weight play a huge part. Just look at the differing 0-60 times quoted in all the magazines, theres so much variance! 0-60 means nothing 600cc+ other than rider skill

I overtook someone who was wheelieing and my front was in no danger of coming up at the time. So (as above) not just a function of acceleration

Forget the weight of the bike for a second.

The rider on one bike is sat back & upright. The rider on the second bike is practically stood up on the pegs with his chest over the screen.

They both have the front wheel at the same height. The second bike is clearly acellerating harder than the first.

So all I need to do to beat a gixxer is hang my body over the front bars hahaha?

Not quite. The SV maybe comparable to the GSX in first gear, but the problem you'll have is having to change up to second at 40ish mph, where as the GSXR is good for around 90-100mph in first.
