what 50cc ?

A friend has just asked me to help find a bike for her son.
He has just turned 16. The budget is around a grand, and he is not interested in what they call a ped, (all 50cc`s are peds in my book) only proper bike shape, road or trail.
Anyone know much about this stuff, what bikes etc.
gonna have a look possibly at yzr? aprilia and a few others, and other suggestions or bikes to avoid, cheers-phil.

Have a look at a company called Rieju. I had an RS1, basically the same as an RS50 (same engine) but about half the price! They also make supermoto type things I think.

Its a Gilera DNA, enough around to get a cheap second hand one. Had 2 friends who loved them :)

Re: what 50cc ?

I had a yamaha tzr50, was fast (derestricted) and beautiful handling (i thought so & so did many 'real' bikers who rode it) only issue is that yamaha dropped the design because they had quite a few issues.

if he's handy at fixing & wants a nice bike, go for one of these!

but BIG hint is that it needs an uprated radiator because when derestricted they always overheat,, i know of a few people including me who covered their spark plugs in aluminium! :(

you should also look at the motorhispania rx50 its an awsome bike and is capable of 65 unrestricted, all i had done was a race exhaust fitted and derestriction, be careful of the gilera's i found them an awful riding position and they aint very sturdy on the roads as they are an imbetween bike, plus they are automatics and quite slow.

heres a pic of my rx50

At 16 you'll be limited to 30 regardless. I would mention that DNAs are pretty common, and share the same engine as all Gilera 50s so servicing/reliability/availability of parts/cost blah blah is going to be way better than some of these 'exotic' 50s

Are you telling me that most 16 year old 'yoofs' out there are riding around on standard 'restricted' 50cc bikes? I (somewhat cynically) have my
doubts.
