Intermitent starting fault
Hi I have a k3 650S which has been totally reliable for last 5mths during which time I have covered 4000mls (total mileage 12000mls) I now have an intermitent starting fault. On switching the ignition on the display shows FI and the red light flashes, the engine turns over but will not fire. I cure this by repeatedly switching the ignition on/off until the error message no longer appears (usually after 5 - 10 turns of ignition) I have sought advice from a garage who said it would be difficult to trace until the error occurs in the workshop.( I anticpate extended labour charges trying to trace problem).
Any ideas???? Is this a problem I could fix without lining the dealers pockets???/ |
Re: Intermitent starting fault
Try a sqoosh of wd40 in the keyhole and let it evaporate and a sqoosh behind the fusebox where the ignition wire goes in from the loom. - failing that download the electrics manual from here and fault find the circuit.
If you need any more pointers of help give me a shout. I've recently fixed a fault on the ignition circuit. Take out the ignition fuse and put it back in (could just be not connecting right) Check the wire the goes into the starter motor (could be damaged, rusty-take it off and cleant the rust off and put it back on) - remember to switch of your bike and disconnect the (-) wire! |
Re: Intermitent starting fault
I had a similar problem, albeit on a curvy, turned out to be an electrical connector which sits roughly by your right knee which was corroded and giving intermittent contact on the wire that takes the start button return to the relay.
Probably not this exact wire, but worth checking over the connectors and such for green fuzz and corrosion. Chris |
Re: Intermitent starting fault
I have downloaded a service manual which gives the error codes for f-i. It mentions putting the bike into dealer mode with a special tool. I have read elsewhere that this tool is not necessary and creating a bridge over the terminal works.
I have located what appears to be the connector, a small white connector with a black cover (positioned under rear seat on left hand side). The connector has approx 6 wires going to it. On removing the cover one side is a metal plate opposite that are 3 recess. Is this the correct connector Im looking for? How is the connection bridged to switch into 'dealer mode'? |

Welcome to the madhouse!:smt026
If you do a search for "Throttle Position Sensor" (I know, not your problem)... there's a Step-By-Step tutorial on the TPS adjustment, and this details (with pictures) how to put the bike in dealer service mode. Meanwhile, I'll have a look through the documents I have about your symptoms so far :). EDIT: OK, so the documents aren't that descriptive for "USER MODE" faults. You really need to put the bike in dealer mode. |
