Insurance premium vs mileage
Hi All,
As you may have heard from a previous post, I've got a new job, with a longer commute - 49 miles each way (same as Baph). Now (off the top of my head) I'm currently insured for 4000 miles/yr. This will need to change to ~25000miles/yr. Now the question is (before I phone my insurer) how much extra (if any) should I expect to pay on my premium for the extra mileage? Cheers, Rich |
Re: Insurance premium vs mileage
Depends on the insurer, but not that much. Most of them count all mileages above 10K as 'unlimited' IIRC, anyway.
I suppose the logic is that whilst you're on the road more, you're also more experienced, so the odds of having an accident don't increase that much. |
Re: Insurance premium vs mileage
As Ceri JC said, it depends on the insurer. I am indeed on an 'unlimited' mileage policy.
Being 24, phoning around for insurance on the SV, the question came up about mileage, and when I said "24 thousand for commuting plus fun miles, lets call it 30 thou" I could hear some of the sales people laughing under their breath. If it helps, I'm with AutoNet insurance, but shop around anyway, because it'll vary more based on where you live rather than the distance you do. Also, oddly, your job matters more than distance does (eg, Barstaff pay more vehicle insurance). I'm paying £330/year FC. |
Re: Insurance premium vs mileage
I have 10k plus miles policy. But I believe the difference due to mileage is marginal. Where you live is the major factor IMO. I paid around £500 for my Hornet/FC living in Manchester with no no claims and no previous riding experience.

Re: Insurance premium vs mileage
Just to close this thread, I phoned express insurance (my current insurer) and have paid £25 to change from 3000/yr to 25000/yr.
Not too bad. |
Re: Insurance premium vs mileage
I have my SV insured for 20,000 miles a year and it didn't cost any extra. I only have the Ducati down for 5000 but i've already done nearly 3000 in a couple of months so may have to change that.

Re: Insurance premium vs mileage
I've been re-quoted by H&R insurance and would(will) have to pay £35 extra for an increase from 4k to 12k miles (never had a car + I knew little about miles when applying for the insurance)
