Actually, the moon was fairly large earlier tonight. It's only a 300mm, so not really a "big 'un'". Now if I had my mates 800mm lens, they would be well big !!

Problem is that the moon moves quite quickly across the sky, anything more than a 4 second exposure sees movement in the picture. That, combined with the fact that I only had my lightweight travel tripod in the car meant that most of my pictures look blurred.

Good pics Jelster:p
You inspired me to get my camera out and have a mess about. I don't really know what I'm doing but I was amazed at how much light you can get at night!
It was totally dark when I took this. I used a 15 second exposure

That was with the camera sitting on the garden chair:laughat:
I really need to get a decent stand for it!

Yep, a full moon on a clear night can give a lot more light than people think. That's a nice shot, with my long range lens anything longer than a 4 second exposure was showing the movement of the moon.

That is a very good first attempt Steve. Try shooting at 1/250s, f11 and iso 200 and you will get decent handheld pics. Adjust the f stop to control the light entering camera. I got decent results doing that. What lens u used?

My Canon 70-300 IS lens. I was trying to get the F stop down, hoping that it would provide more detail. Thinking about it, I don't why now... Like, it's not as if I need any depth of field, It's only 100's of thousands of miles away :D

(and my lens wasn't at the end of the focal range either... Christ knows what Canon think I'm going to focus on if the moon's not far enough away... Maybe I should have stepped back a little )

Well you know most lenss perform best stopped down 2 stops rather than wide open in terms of sharpness. A lot of people normally expose the moon for too long so a faster shutter speed will help not burn out detail.
