Stupid question time
 

Well I'm stupid and I'm not ashamed to admit cos I guess that I'm not the only one who doesn't know.

Several people write on here that their bike sounds really good 'on the overrun'.

What is the 'overrun' please? When/how will I know when my bike is 'overunning'?

Not stupid. No question is stupid. If you dont know something, you dont know something! SO its good to ask!

I think overrun means when decelerating off the throttle...least, thats what I've always taken it to mean and everyone seems to understand what I mean when i tlak about the sound on the overrun

I dont know why its called overrun though...

Yep, NOT A STUPID QUESTION at all.
It can also happen when you are going down a hill and you throttle back.
Bike doesn't speed up or slow down , but the revs stay up.

Think thats what it means!?

Yup as said, overrun is when you come off the throttle. What normally happens is that the engine tries to slow down, but the momentum of the bike keeps the speed up. As a result, rather than the engine driving the rear wheel, the rear wheel is driving the engine - hence overrun.

Very interesting, thank you peeps!!! I'm going to experiment this morning but sadly we have no tunnels in these parts.

Perhaps others have some 'stupid' quezzies - fire away...

Basically, for a given throttle position, the engine is running faster than the speed of the bike, so your effectively using it as a brake. Drop a gear or two as you're slowing down, close the throttle and let the engine take the strain.

Depending on the mapping, you'll get bangs & pops from a race can. This is unspent fuel in the exhaust which is igniting with the hot gas being expelled. My old Gixxer 600 would shoot flames out the back if I got it right.

V-twins sound really good in overrun, fours not always as good, but my 'Blade still manages a crackle or two with the stubby can on.
