Advice needed - Engine trouble
 

Bought a non-running SV650 cheap. Stripped it today to see what I could find wrong. Immediately noticed metal flakes in the carbs, and a few metal chunks fell out of the front exhaust pipe when I disconnected it (see second pic).

I took the cover of the front cylinder and the bottom (exit) cams were pushing against the cam cover. Gonna strip it further when I get a bit time but does anyone have an opion on whats happened or what the metal bits are. Looks like the top of a valve to me but I'm not very mechanically minded.

Also should mention,

Guy said the problem began with rattling noise from front cylinder area and loss of power. I got it home and put the battery in, radiator on, wired it up etc.. Bike wouldnt start (which i thought it might not). Just got a clicking noise from the relay.

The bike would wheel around freely in neutral, and I could move through the gears no problem. But the rear wheel would lock up (you could move it if you pushed hard enough) in first, second, third and fourth gears with the clutch pulled IN. In fifth and sixth you could wheel it round ok (but not as easy as in neutral).

First thoughts were the gearbox could be goosed also, but then thought that it might be the engine thats causing this?....

lets have a pic of the camshaft area, could help.

looks like top end rebuild time to me (though I don't have much experience of this area on the SV)

I reckon your best bet would be to buy an engine from a crashed bike and swap.Plenty of lumps about,and almost bound to be cheaper than rebuilding one with bits of metal falling out of it.

Good afternoon.
OUCH! That's a pretty good example of a snapped valve if ever I saw one!
My guess is that the camchain tensioner on the front cylinder gave up, & the valve timing jumped with consequent meeting of piston & valves. Also by the sound of it the camshaft mounting bolts have sheared, hence the camshaft touching the cover.
I wouldn't be tempted to fit another top end, for often an impact like this has a negative effect on the big end bearing. As suggested, go for a secondhand engine. Make sure you check the carburettors out properly, for you don't want the expense & effort of an engine swap to be ruined by a stray bit of the old engine dropping into the works from the carburettors.

Investigated a bit further.

Loosened the cam chain, removed the cams.

At first sight didnt look too bad, removed one bucket to find the shim was broke, the other buckets/valves/springs looked ok but wouldnt move.

So I removed the front cylinder head to get a better look

Yep, if the piston was intact I'd have probably stuck a new top on it myself, and applied a judicious portion of Hope with regards to the bottom end. But you'd be pretty lucky for that to work I think.

Time to pull the wheelie bin towards the garage.

I'd be searching out a replacement engine if I were you.
