520 sprocket with 525 chain?
Hi folks,
Just wondering if anyone can advise whether it's OK to run a 520 rear sprocket with a 525 chain? I know the difference between the 520 and 525 is the width of the rollers, the 520 = 1/4" (6.35mm) and the 525 = 5/16" (7.94mm) so there's an extra 1.6mm width between the sideplates of the chain which is going to allow extra lateral movement of the chain on the sprocket. But I'm not sure whether this would be OK or not........ (There's a bit of clearance between the Renthal rear sprocket and sideplates of the 525 chain i currently have on, but i don't know whether this Renthal is a 525 or 520 rear already.) |

Morning all.
Definite no-no! Cheers. |

Thanks for that spanner man.

Re: 520 sprocket with 525 chain?
'Pitch' is the distance between teeth isn't it??? If you overlaid a 44t 520 and a 44t 525, they wouldn't look the same ... not just one is thinner than the other ...
So no, you can't use a diff pitch chain to sprocket ... |
Re: 520 sprocket with 525 chain?
Thats what I thought. The 525 and 530 numbers are the distance between the pins,so the teeth on the sprocket would be the wrong distance apart.
Not a good idea. |
Re: 520 sprocket with 525 chain?
Nah, the pitch is the first number, in eights of an inch, so they're both 5/8ths chains. Width is the second two, 525 is 5/8 pitch, 2.5/8ths width.
Still wouldn't put a 525 on a 520 chainset though, for obvious reasons, even 1/16th of an inch is quite a lot. |
Re: 520 sprocket with 525 chain?
Thanks for unscrambling that.Ive always just made sure all the nimbers are the same without thinking what they actually mean.

Re: 520 sprocket with 525 chain?
If anyone want's a peep at the various sizes to compare there's a handy little table of chain dimensions on this page http://www.gizmology.net/sprockets.htm
I knew the pitch of the 525 & 520 were the same, but didn't know whether it was good or bad practice to use a mixture of 525 chain and 520 sprocket. Cheers for steering me in the right direction folks. |
