new rules number plates

Sorry if this has been posted before but haven't been on the site recently and haven't had time to read through etc.

Apparently on 2 Oct new rule in MOT says that number plate must also contain the details of the supplier name and address along the bottom of the plate. Colleagues's Son's car just failed because of it so had to buy new plates. Assume this is to curb use of show/mini plates etc and will also apply to bikes? Suppose it will call for a quick change back to original plate when MOT comes around.

This has annoyed me somewhat as I have just put my private plate on my car. I got the plates made up at Halfords, now what I supposed to do?
Have I got to pay again to have plates made up with a name at the bottom.

I am happy to comply but its always at my expense.

That's my understanding. And of course if it fails MOT you have to have it done there and then (almost, at least within a few days) to get a free retest.

If your private plates are 'legal' I would have thought that the supplier should have been obliged to add these details?

If the rules state that plates have to have the supplier name in the "tagline" the solution is pretty simple.

Some people re-fit baffles for the MOT don't they? Well, why not have two plates? Afterall, a new plate is cheaper than a re-test.

The MOT is effectivley invalidated the second you ride away from the test centre anyway.

It's been the case since October 2001 that the number plate letters and numbers should be a standard size, spacing and font with the details of the plate manufacturer at the bottom. It should also have the British Standard kite mark to show it has the correct reflective properties.
We used to be able to give out a fix-it (VDRS) but rules changed and went down the enforcement route, ie £30 fine.
TBH, only really silly fonts get any attention, or people who use black or yellow/white nuts to change letters to make the plate "read" right.
With the vast increse in ANPR systems in the UK, having a plate that is not standard is, in a way, self defeating. I have recovered quite a few stolen cars that have been flagged as stolen by systems in place in the M'cr area. If the plate can't be read, then it can't be identified.
Having said that, ANPR isn't the be all and end all that it was promised. The gate at work is apparently a Rover 25 with no tax! That's 'cos the camera reads the vertical bars in the gate as part of a plate and "interprets" the rest!
Still can't beat the mark one human eyeball IMHO!

That was pretty much the example given to me by the officer that stopped me for white lining (oops). So I paid £30 for the ticket. But also, because he actually made some sense (I neglected to tell him about the tracker & gubbins I have fitted to the bike but that was all besides the point), I bought a bigger plate.

Now, the outer dimensions of the plate aren't what the regs say they should be, but the letters are big enough to be recognised on ANPR.

To be honest though, on my 7x5 plate, I've had police sat right behind me in traffic, and I've had them look over the bike, with nothing said other than the last time I was stopped. However, 7x5 doesn't allow for letters big enough to allow ANPR.

If you want to ride without paying road tax, get a 7x5 and ANPR won't know you don't have tax. If you want to sleep safely at night knowing your bike can be reported stolen, then located by ANPR, use your brain! I'll go for the latter...

IMHO, factor the plate into the price you pay, just like anything else on a second hand bike.

The details on the plate have to be the place that sold the plate, not the place that sold the bike. That could be Halfords, it could be a website.

Thats what I do, takes 2 or 3 minutes max to swap them over and it guarantees that the bike wont fail the MOT on the number plate.

AFAIK Halfords don't sell show plates? They always require you to bring your V5. If that is the case & your plates don't say Halfords & comply with all the other regs take them back for a replacement.
