I take photo's when the service includes valve clearance checks, this even satisfied a dealer (admittedly a Suzuki dealer).

D220 seems to have a excessive tread pattern, so I would have thought that would be good in the rain, plus you would not be 'pushing' the front so much in winter.

Managed 4000mls out of the rear on D220's and 4000mls on a Roadsmart replacement.
Just changed the front at 8000mls (original D220).
Mixing Roadsmart rear and D220 front caused no problem....

THIS IS A GUESS ONLY:
more noise and worst case scenario chain locking up or snapping.
Never heard of this happening before it was obvious bearing wanting changing.

with chain off I would expect no noise as they would be no tension on the bearing to make it squeal, but if they is no wobble (play) in the bearing with chain off I would leave things as they are,...

If front sprocket has 'nylon' insert, ie not solid steel, it can sometimes ride up on the nylon insert which can cause ticking sound , not sure if that explains the squeal? well known on Bandits.
