Re: French/Swiss/Italian Alps '18 (too many pics)

Amazing views, although the lack of snow in the ski resort (which was that by the way) was a bit disturbing ...

Re: The running thread.

It's been a bit of a mixed week for me - I went running on Tuesday, and my ankle gave way after less than a mile of easy running. No amount of stretching would stop it from hurting after a couple of...

Re: 2017 SV versus 2018 SV

To answer myself ... you can grab them from the Suzuki website. The tanks look near identical to me externally.

Re: 2017 SV versus 2018 SV

One of the pages on the sv650.org site I've found repeatedly useful, which is unfortunately not maintained any more, is the model history:...

Re: What have you tinkered with today?

When I got my bike back on the road, I bought a cheap (Powerline) battery. I finally found some time to replace it with the Motobatt I bought last month. Wow! What a difference. The starter is quite...

Re: The running thread.

I've been lurking on this thread for a bit - I started running around 2005 and joined a club in 2012. But, for the past three years, I've been suffering from an intermittent ankle injury. I've seen...

Re: Pointy no spark

I would expect the voltage at the coils to be much closer to the battery voltage as the coils are open circuit. Does the voltage drop further if you turn the lights on?

I'd guess a bad connection...

Re: Erratic ignition now no power, no start

I'm not sure where you've got this from, if the voltage across a (relatively) fixed resistance load drops, the current will also drop.

With a corroded connection, it's effectively an additional...

My least favourite road ...

... is now the A10. I went up from St Albans to King's Lynn (and back) today. Some of the A10 either has been repaired really badly, or has stealth speed bumps every 50 yards or so.

The bumps are...

Re: Gripe of the day - What is yours?

I remember trying to buy either 10mm or 3/8" bolts in the 90s (I can't remember which) and the packets from B&Q (I think) had both listed with no clue as to what they actually were ...

Re: Gripe of the day - What is yours?

I switched and saved 45 with a lower compulsory excess, too. I've never found the comparison sites that useful as the detailed quotes are always so different - but maybe that's because I have some...

Insurance, specifically the tax on people who don't shop around.

Two years ago, 98. Last year, 146 (with an increased excess, too). This year, 214. Now I have to waste time getting quotes.

Re: Watch out for tourists

I did that after driving in the US - I turned onto a dual carriageway in the wrong direction. Luckily (this was 25 years ago) it was just grass to cross back.

Re: Alternator/reg/rec question ...

Thanks - the resistance from r/r to the battery was 0.2 and 0.4 ohms, which doesn't look too high to me. I'll hold off and buy a decent battery when I can afford one!

Re: Alternator/reg/rec question ...

So, I've had a look at as much as I can - the generator looks fine (resistance within normal range, output on all three pairs rising from ~25V to ~90V going from idle to 5k RPM). All contacts clean...

Re: Alternator/reg/rec question ...

I did have a look at it, and there are SAE connectors with AWG 12 wires which may do it, and there are US sites with AWG 10 wired connectors which should definitely work, but I never managed to find...

Re: Alternator/reg/rec question ...

Thanks all - the solar charger would be a problem as there's another garage above me and it would be a bit awkward to get a wire out of the front. I might give the car battery idea a go, as I do have...
