Re: Science

I've just found that we made something that goes even faster, though it took a gravitational slingshot around Saturn to get it up to speed.

Voyager 1 is currently heading into the outer reaches...

Re: Science

Was that a precursor to the SR-71 Blackbird?? Shame there aren't any more of them flying. I was at an air show where one did a low pass on full afterburner - incredible.

BTW, the orbital speed of...

Re: Science

In vacuum all the colours are equally fast, but in air red is slightly faster.

The calculation of wavelength dependent dispersion in a medium of refractive index 1.0003 is left as an exercise for...

Re: Bellypans, who makes 'em?

I think I have a pyramid plastics one hanging around in my garage for the SV650. Never got around to making brackets for it though.

Re: Anyone left in the Thames Valley area ?

Sounds about the same as the Soho Massive, who only meet up once a year.

Re: Oh no, not again (speeding)

Unfortunately, most speed partnerships aren't run by coppers these days. They're run by bureaucrats.

The margin of 10%+2mph comes from the ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) guidelines...

Re: Speeding question.

If they drive at 70mph they create a mini traffic jam because nobody will pass them. So there's no chance they will catch an inattentive speeder. Better to drive at 60mph in front of a van or truck...

Re: Speeding question.

Traffic cars should all have forward facing video and ANPR, but from your description it doesn't sound like they would have enough evidence to take action.

In theory it would just take the opinion...

Re: Fuel level gauge - o-ring or no?

You didn't specify which bike you're riding, but if the fuel tank sender only has one wire it probably uses the tank to complete the circuit. This used to be common on older cars, and I assume also...

Re: Race Scrub tyres

Out of 88 views (including mine), I wonder how many still have an SV.

I'm riding a Fazer which takes 180 profile rear, so I wouldn't usually reply.

Re: Vintage film cameras

Apologies for the slow reply, I missed your post.

These days I'm pretty much all digital. If I shoot any more film it will be 6x6. I've got a bag full of Bronica SQA gear and it produces awesome...

Re: Vintage film cameras

IIRC, the Nikon FE is almost identical to my FE2 which was one of my favourite film cameras to shoot. Light, quiet, and super simple metering. A real pleasure to use.

So, yeah. You definitely...

Re: Vehicle Excise Duty Petition (Road Tax)

VED is small potatoes in the grand scheme of things. I reckon I pay more income tax every day I work than the annual VED on my motorbike.

So can someone start a petition for abolition of VED, and...

Re: Any qualified scuba divers out there?

I've went diving off something similar many years ago. IIRC the holds had been converted to bunks and the old crew cabin to the compressor room. It was pretty cool to tie up in port after a day's...

Re: Gripe of the day - What is yours?

White van drivers that crash into your car while it's parked, then race off before anyone can get their registration. Looks like I pay a 350 excess then higher premiums for the next few years.

One of my friends broke his collar bone but also dislocated the shoulder. They didn't spot the dislocation on the initial x-rays. As a result it turned into quite a serious problem getting it back...

Re: NCB question

Back in the days before computers, insurance premiums were calculated using paper tables and no claims discount was exactly that. A discount which was applied at a certain stage in the calculation.

With one or two exceptions, independent candidates regularly get stuffed by the organised parties.

Labour and Conservatives can turn up in marginal consistencies with a battle bus stuffed with...

I'd be happy with that idea providing there was a box on the ballot paper that said, "I wouldn't trust any of these tosspots to organise a party in a brewery"

Re: Catalonia

All of three independence votes (Scotland, Brexit, and Catalonia) had the same major deficiency - no real facts about what would happen after the vote. Both sides just made assumptions which suited...

Only if it's a bank holiday weekend.

Madrid signed a decree removing their autonomy within hours of the independence declaration this time around.

Re: Catalonia

Oh, and in the case of Canvey can we a vote on casting them adrift??

A new moat will have to be dug from the Essex side because any equipment left on the Canvey side would probably 'wander'.
