Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

If I want mountains & sea, I go to my villa in Turkey. It is at the foot of a 1,969 metre mountain and 10 minutes from the famous lagoon at Olu Deniz. The world paragliding championship is held off...

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

Saw this on a T-shirt yesterday:

Eat well
Exercise lots
Die anyway.

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

As I implied in my earlier post, in my experience there is no chance of councils implementing proper business organisation and practices. There is an institutionised mindset that prevents it.

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

Bibs,

it can work if properly implemented. There is a company called Norse that tenders to local authorities to take over their services on a joint ownership partnership. The way it works is that...

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

My experience is that most council workers came straight from school and stayed on, never having worked in the private sector and their only experience of working life was in the archaic working...

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

Bibs, a lot of the equipment supplies is down to the local authority dept responsible. The relevant dept for the council I worked for had a poor record of supplying stuff and there were so many...

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

There's also the snob factor. I was once in Aldi watching a smartly dressed late 20's couple packing their shopping.

Into expensive looking fabric and wood handled Waitrose bags.

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

I discovered Burtons when I lived across the Calder Road in the Sighthill estate in 2001/2. I too ate so much that I got sick of them. I was an IT contractor and went for the cheapest flat I could...

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

Bibs, if you want shortbread the next time you are in Edinburgh, go to the Burtons factory in Sighthill. They have a factory shop where you can buy bags full of broken and misshapes of all the...

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

I have a choice for my weekly shop. I can either drive 10 miles each way to my nearest Aldi at a petrol cost of about £4, or I can do the same shop in the Co-op in my village about 400 meters away. I...

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

If you ever get the opportunity, try Adnams Broadside. It's a deep red colour and is 6.3% in bottles and slightly less at 4.7%. From Suffolk though so good luck!

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

Thanks Yoko. I was just sent a voucher for £6 off a £40 shop at Tesco so that makes it even more reasonable. I will definitely get a bottle.

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

I find that a very large (at least quadruple measure) of a good Islay malt or Talisker relieves any stress :D

It's a pity I can't afford Ardbeg these days.

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

I know what you mean about niche skills; that's how I got into contracting in the first place. I was head hunted because I was one of only 2 people in the UK with the mix of skills that was wanted...

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

Mav, because I was a contractor, I was constantly changing employers. I once worked out that I had worked for 25 companies in my career, 6 weeks being the shortest. term. When I was a contractor I...

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

Odd isn't it Mav. I was a freelance IT analyst/designer for many years before IR35 killed that career in 2003. Demanding work but extremely satisfying at the end of the day. 15 years later and...

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

Auto salvage is the way to go. I got a wheel for my Impreza with an almost new tyre on it for £30 from my local breakers. It was a rare one too as it was a design only used for 2 years.

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread

Even if they accepted the claim, it's highly unlikely that they would pay for more than the one damaged wheel anyway. The council I worked for wouldn't as the liability is for the damaged one only.
