I was stripping to service the swingarm bearings so the brake hose wasn't an issue. True about the force going through the brakes, that means the chain is taking is then

That can't be so bad then. Mine was pretty tight, I put a big lump of softwood wrapped in towels through the wheel and over the swingarm.

I don't mean to be the forecast of doom but you have to wonder with that sort of force what stresses the crank has been under and whether is has suffered as a result.
