Re: Piston slap or valves?

I hear you, but when the engine is warm, the noise is gone completely, and I mean completely. It can't be cam chain! I've had a cam chain worn beyond limit and the noise was always their regardless...

Re: Piston slap or valves?

Here's a clip I recorded of the sound of cold startup.

https://youtu.be/_FvQY8O7JdU

Proper rattle. But as I say, completely disappears when warm and sounds happy.

I checked the exhaust...

Piston slap or valves?

Hi guys,

My SV650 has 42k miles on the clock and I'm starting to hear a loud ticking noise coming from the front, it's definitely not normal SV engine ticking.

At first I suspected it may be...

Re: Frame weld crack!

Any ideas of cost for such a weld? Not sure if engine would need removing or not? Will speak to local mechanic tomorrow. It's my only transport. Seems safe enough short term but wouldn't like to...

Re: Noisy Cam chain?

I can assure you it wasn't skipped oil changes. I renew every 3k miles without a miss.

Only let down was the oil leak last year which had me running low for a short period. But that was almost a...

Re: Noisy Cam chain?

Quick update:

She's back!!! And holy **** she's like new! New cam chain. Old one was stretched way beyond limits and even skipped two teeth! valve clearances adjusted as exhaust way too tight.

Re: Noisy Cam chain?

Well I've taken it to Bolton motorcycle workshop today and the mechanic is 100% certain it's cam chain.

I'm gonna get this fixed. cost around £500 incl labour.

Then I'll be adding liqui-moly...

Re: Noisy Cam chain?

I've had the bike since 10k with one previous owner. Was immaculate when bought and has run without issue for 3 years.

Last year I had an oil leak which meant I ran on very low engine oil for...

Re: Noisy Cam chain?

Unless my engine was screwed completely I wouldn't be able to trust a used engine. My communte costs right now are minimal. £25/week. I can justify £500 on a repair on my own engine. I know this...

Re: Noisy Cam chain?

Problem with that is I'd not get more than £500 for it. Then I don't know what costly problem I'd encounter in the future with another bike. If I get the cam chains sorted I know they're good for...

Re: Noisy Cam chain?

Hmmm... never used a mobile mechanic. Would have thought this sort of job requires a proper garage?

Re: Noisy Cam chain?

Spring was removed before unbolting the tensioner, so it was definitely fully extended before touching it.

Re: Anyone available for cam chain work? Manchester/Lancashire

No chance I'm doing it. I lack the tools, time and patience. I'd rather leave it to a pro. I'm not comfortable going further than changing the drive chain and sprockets. I'm a good electronics...

Re: Noisy Cam chain?

Cheers for the advice guys. I've taken out the tensioner and was fully extended. Not stuck and in perfect working order. Seems to me like cam chain must be worn then right?

Re: Noisy Cam chain?

Thanks chris,

I may try taking the tensioner out entirely and checking it out first and give clean etc.

Any idea of cost of new cam chain if this isn't the case.

Cheers.

Re: Noisy Cam chain?

Thanks for opinion. I just don't know if the video does the noise justice. I mean, the end can has no baffle so it's loud. And at idle, the cam noise is way more noticeable than the exhaust. It maybe...

Re: SK3 TRE and TPS Mod, My experience...

Don't worry, I am using a metal film resistor, I have 1000's of them.

Either way, it has made a huge difference and am loving it.
