I know what you mean. I like the Hollywood photos from the 30's and 40's, again black and white but the lighting was always spot on. Also look up Karsh of Ottawa, he really knew how to use light.

There are a lot of dams on my doorstep (wales) and I keep finding more. I like them too, maybe because water always adds something to a landscape.
