Re: Solar panels

Yes but over demand can be managed in the future with smart meters by using penalising smart tariffs or localised black outs. You knew that when you agreed top have one right?

Re: Solar panels

Doesn't look like Flymo (the OP) has been on here in many years - tried his email, bounces, tried his facebook, not updated in a long time

Re: Solar panels

6 years since I last looked at this thread :)
Whats the 10 year verdict on the panels Flymo?

I now live in Wales, the place I purchased has a 4KW system on the roof with a feed in of about...

Re: Solar panels

That sounds better than expected :o
so break even in what - 8-10 years?
How long from then is the tariff guaranteed? Is it RPI or CPI?

Re: Solar panels

This thread has been quiet for a couple of years, but interested how its still going.

The efficiency of panels continues to climb, they were 7% last time I looked, now they are 18% or better, and...

Re: Solar panels

True, though with the feed in tarrif system you sell it expensive and buy it back cheap, so thats a bit like a battery!
On the other hand, DIY 12v stuff could be thrown together cheap as chips. Car...

Re: Solar panels

All a bit ambiguous really isn't it.
A worry is the unproven longevity of the equipment. The inverter will almost certainly fail, the PV panels are not expected but who can tell. Its all and well...

Re: Solar panels

Tariffs include inflation based on the Retail Prices Index. An increase of 4.8% has been applied from April 2011.

The tool doesn't include the following:

Fuel price increases over time

Re: Solar panels

ahh thats a better one. 9 and a bit years payback on a 4kw system in the south, assuming no loan taken out and no maintenance charges.
But that is just return of capital, you can see from the...

Re: Solar panels

Ta.
Have Done, it reckons 'estimated payback' is 14 years. However, thats really vague, as it doesn't explain if thats just a return of capital, or break even when versus investment

Re: Solar panels

I'm trying to be convinced. I accept that electricity charges will rise, probably by more than inflation for the foreseeable future.
Your own statement saying it will have paid for itself in 9...

Re: Solar panels

Its easy to get 6-8% on a sum of 15k if you commit to 5 years plus.
Currently NS&I will give you RPI+0.5% tax free on much smaller amounts.
But ok, I'm referring to the presentation I attended....

Re: Solar panels

I still can't see how the maths stacks up. Assume £15k outlay (loss). Assume future governments will honour the generous feed in tarriffs. I'm led to believe I can recover my capital after 10 years,...

Re: Solar panels

Well actually yes maybe. PV panel efficiency is pretty poor just now, in 10 years things may have improved to the point it costs much less, is smaller and more efficient. Selling a house with a...
