How good is the fit between inside diameter of your handlebars and unexpanded diameter of the fixing ? Any gap will limit the amount of contact between inside of bars and the expanding part, and...

The problem maybe that the bit with the splits in is only expanding on the very inner end (especially if the expansion nut has a steep angle on it ) - a bit of rubber or tape gives a bit of...
