The packing is impossible to remove without ruining it when you fit an aftermarket can, but it is available as a replacement part from Suzuki (about 25) or you could use a reducer sleeve like this...

With the VNs having footboards, that must help with your knees too as you can change your leg position while on the go. Enjoy it!

His was a 21 plate Z so probably a Euro 5, which may explain the jerky throttle response .... and I totally agree with you on 90+bhp being wasted, I sometimes look at things like the 890 Duke but...
