It is a rented house(?), so is up to the landlady to fix it. She should fix it to, as it is a fire hazard to not be able to use one of the means of escape.

Absolutely.
Difficult to resolve unless your Landlady is prepared to stump up for a decent quality door. I'm afraid that although it may be hardwood you do still only get what you pay for and cheaper doors are simply more prone to swelling/shrinkage with conditions. Unfortunately the Landlady could opt for the cheap option of planing which would satisfy safety issues; as far as shrinkage is concerned this will depend on how much planing would be required to ease it before shrikage offers the opposite problem.
