i think he means the petrol tank on his bike - not a tank like the army would use.
A clay bar will remove anything that's bonded onto you paint work. Maguires do a neat little kit with a detail spray and a clay bar but its not cheap. I use it on my car and bike a couple of times a year - you'd be amazed how much crap it removes even from freshly washed paintwork. i'm sure it would deal with a bit of spider poo.
