Has anyone have any experience with these?

I bought a set before Christmas to help get me from London back to Cardiff for the standard issue turkey/booze fest. After wiring them up I took off and got a few miles under my belt before becoming totally frustrated with the damn things.

Basically, you need to keep switching them between 'start' mode and 'on' mode. The respective difference between the two seems to be 'warm up' and 'cool down'. I'm not sure why they can set the heat output to something useful but on that point I have had a thought...

Is it possible (seems reasonable) to install a variable resistor (or something similar) somewhere within the circuit so that the 'start' output can be modified to something constant and reasonable - like a dimmer light switch? I personally don't have a clue when it comes to electronics but would be very grateful for some advice.
